Titles, effects and transitions
Add text, change the look of a clip, and join clips with a transition.
Titles, Effects and Transitions remember their searches, filters and scroll positions for each project in this browser. The Text panel also remembers its internal tab. Switching panels or reopening the project returns to the last view with playback paused.
Titles live on the Titles tab of the Text panel; its other tabs hold your captions and the Transcript of the timeline's speech. Effects and transitions each have their own panel on the rail. All three have a search box, category filters, and a star to keep your favourites at hand.
Titles
Hover over a title to preview it on your picture. Click it to add it to the timeline at the playhead. Select the title clip to change its text and style in the inspector.
Effects
Drag an effect onto a clip on the timeline. Its settings then appear in that clip's inspector, where you can adjust it, reset it, or remove it. The Audio category holds effects for sound — EQ, filters, a compressor, a limiter and a de-esser: see Mixing sound.
A clip's picture effects work from the top of its list down: a Vignette above Brightness is brightened along with the picture, and one below it is not. Film grain is the same every time you play or export a frame, so what you see in the preview is what your file contains. Basic colour adjustments also prepare efficiently on computers without graphics acceleration. Blur keeps the same appearance when the editor needs to use software rendering.
To correct or grade a clip's colour — white balance, exposure, curves and colour wheels — use the Colour panel on the rail; its grade is applied before the clip's other effects. See Colour.
Transitions
Set the Duration at the top of the panel, then:
- drag a transition onto the edge of a clip to fade it in or out, or onto the cut between two clips to mix one into the other; or
- select a clip and click a transition's In or Out button to apply it to that clip's start or end.
The default length of new transitions is set in Preferences → General.
