Organising assets

Folders, colours, search, filters and sorting in the Assets panel.

Each project remembers your Assets search, type filter, sort order, selection and scroll position in this browser. Switching panels, refreshing or reopening the project returns to that view. Clearing site data removes this remembered workspace.

The Assets panel holds everything in your project: footage, sound, images, generated media and timelines.

Find an asset

  • Type in Search assets… to filter by name.
  • The three buttons below the search show only video, audio or images. Click the active one again to show everything.
  • The sort menu orders assets by Name A-Z, Name Z-A, Type or Color.
  • The two arrow buttons expand or collapse every folder at once.

Folders and colours

Right-click an empty part of the panel and choose New folder or New timeline. Right-click a folder to rename it, give it a Color, create a folder inside it, move the selected assets into it, or delete it. Deleting a folder asks first, and says how many assets and timeline clips it holds.

Drag assets onto a folder to move them. Hold a folder over another one while dragging to open it.

Generated media added to Assets goes into its own folder — Images, Shots, Voice and so on — and every reframed export lands in Reframe by itself. You can rename or move these folders; new results still go into them. Select one to see what it receives.

Storyboard images added to Assets have separate First Frames, Middle Frames and Last Frames folders under Images. Selecting Middle Frames identifies it as receiving generated middle frames. See Middle frame.

Right-click an asset

  • Edit video — change a video with AI. See Editing a video in a project.
  • Relink file… — point an offline clip at its file.
  • New folder from selection — put the selected assets in a new folder.
  • Copy
  • Reveal in scene — jump to where the asset is used, in any timeline.
  • Delete

Deleting an asset removes it from the project. The file on your computer is never touched.

Media information

Select an asset to see its details in the inspector: its duration, and for video its resolution, frame rate, codec and rotation; for audio its codec, sample rate and channels.

Insert part of a video

Insert edits preserve reversed playback, held frames and animated properties when splitting a clip. Captions split around the added footage, and markers, ranges and retained transitions move with the existing edit. Insert scene uses this same ripple edit after you review its generated result; both the complete sequence and the extracted scene remain in Assets. See Insert a scene.

Double-click a video to open its source preview. Move the video to the first frame you want and choose Mark In, then move to the last frame and choose Mark Out. The I and O keys do the same thing while this preview is open. You can set either mark on its own: an In without an Out runs to the end of the video, and an Out without an In starts at the beginning.

Insert (,) adds that range to the active timeline and moves existing clips at and after it to the right; a clip beneath it is split first, so nothing is overwritten. Overwrite (.) replaces what is under the new clip and moves nothing. Both use the first targeted video track, and land at the playhead unless the timeline has In or Out marks; the line beside the buttons says where. See Three-point editing. Turn off Include audio when you want the picture without its source sound; for a video with no sound it is switched off for you. The preview stays open if the edit cannot be completed, so you can fix the problem; after a successful edit it closes automatically. Each edit is one Undo step.

Your marks are remembered for each video until you leave the project. With the preview closed, select a video in Assets and press the same two keys to place its marked range, or the whole video if you marked nothing.

Right-click generated media and choose Download to save the original file. Downloads keep the original file type and use a readable filename where available.

Relight a video

Right-click one short video and choose Relight…. Place lights around the sphere or upload a lighting reference, check the estimate, then generate and compare. Keeping the result adds a new asset; existing timeline uses stay as they are. Videos must be about 2.33 to 15 seconds.
