The clip inspector

Position, scale, crop, speed, volume and keyframes for the selected clip.

The inspector remembers expanded sections and scroll positions for the selected item in this browser. Reopening a project restores its last selection when that item still exists. Playback stays paused.

Select a clip on the timeline and the inspector, on the right, shows its settings. Click a section's name to open or close it; the arrow beside it resets the section.

A selected caption shows something simpler: its words, which you can edit there, and Show in the caption list, which opens it in the Text panel. With the Text panel's Captions tab open, the inspector shows the caption style instead, until you select a clip that is not a caption. See Captions.

Transform

  • Crop — trim the picture's edges, directly on the preview.
  • Position, Scale and Rotation. The lock keeps the width and height in proportion.
  • Opacity, from 0 to 100%.
  • Flip horizontally or vertically.
  • Blend mode — how the clip mixes with the tracks beneath it.

Timing

  • Start time — where the clip begins on the timeline, in seconds.
  • Speed — 0 is normal speed. Positive values speed the clip up, to 100 times; negative values slow it down, to a hundredth.
  • Reverse plays the clip backwards. Freeze frame holds the frame under the playhead.
  • Trim start and Trim end — which part of the source clip plays.

Video and audio trims stop when their source media runs out. Still images and title clips have no finite source length, so Trim end can keep extending them for as long as the timeline needs.

Audio

  • Volume, from 0 to 200%. Mute silences the clip.
  • Gain, from −24 to +24 dB, makes the whole recording louder or quieter before its volume, so a quiet take can be raised without changing the shape of its volume points. See Mixing sound.
  • Fade in and Fade out, in seconds.
  • Denoise audio… opens the paid clean-up for the clip's sound — for a video clip, its audio clip. It is the same dialog as on the timeline; see Denoise audio.

Audio effects

Audio effects you drag onto the clip from the Effects panel's Audio category are listed here, in the order they work on the sound, with Move up and Move down. For a video clip whose sound is on an audio track, this shows that audio clip's effects. See Mixing sound.

Keyframes

Most numbers have a small diamond beside them. Click it to set a keyframe at the playhead; move the playhead, change the value, and cutipAI animates between them. The diamond in the inspector's header opens a keyframe lane on the timeline, where you can see and move the keyframes of the selected clip.

Effects

Picture effects you drag onto the clip from the Effects panel appear here too, with their own settings. See Titles, effects and transitions. A clip graded in the Colour panel shows Colour grade here (Colour grade · off when the grade is switched off), with Open in Colour to edit it: see Colour.
